Caverns is the 9th level/chapter in the Red Faction single player campaign. It consists of four individual maps and begins with Parker chasing Capek. Caverns is followed by L10: Capek's Zoo.

L9S1: Cavern Entrance

L9S1 starts you in the airlock which opens into the caverns. Hendrix lets you know that "Capek headed out that was, Parker" but there are no cameras for Hendrix to continue following your progress. If you didn't pick them up before the level load, you'll want to pick up the Environmental Suit in the airlock, especially if you are wearing the Lab Coat up to this point. Once you're kitted up, head out into the caverns and you'll find a large chasm between two walkways. As you progress forward, you'll encounter Reapers for the first time in a cave. You'll exit that cave on the opposite side of the chasm that you started and eventually find yourself in a tight cave before triggering the next level load.

L9S2: Underwater Cavern

You start L9S2 in the tight corridor but progressing forward you end up in a larger open area with water straight ahead and a pathway on the left. At this point you have two options:

1. Continue forward through the water and follow the path straight and eventually end up on the pathway you can see above you at the start of the level.

2. Take advantage of Geo-Mod to create a way up to the pathway without going through the water.

Either way, you'll end up on the pathway and enter another tighter corridor before you hit another level load into L9S3.

L9S3: The Artifact

You'll start L9S3 in a corridor before heading forward into a large room with a chasm and a walkway. If you peek down over the walkway, you'll see large reapers on a floor below. Follow the walkway until you reach the area with the large reapers. Notice there are several steam vents coming out of the ground. These will damage you so you'll need to watch your step while you fight or run from the reapers. You'll have to jump up a steep path into a bit of a tight fit to get out of the large reaper room. This small passage leads into another room full of small reapers who will bolt toward you when they see you. Once you've disposed of them, you'll have a chance to pick up a flamethrower and fusion rocket launcher. Of note, the locations of these weapons are slightly different on the PlayStation version of the game than the PC version.

1. On PlayStation: Entering the room where the small reapers are, you should see a relatively small hole in the wall on the right of the cave adjacent to the ground. Shoot/detonate an explosive ( Rocket Launcher, Grenade, or Remote Charge into that hole and a hole will appear that is much larger than normal. On the other side of this hole will be a walkway to a large room with an encompassing walkway and a pillar in the middle of a chasm. Jump on that pillar and you'll be treated to a Fusion Rocket Launcher, a Flame Thrower, and full health and armor. 2. On PC: The room that had the small reapers has the flame thrower next to a dead guard. If you want the health, armor, and the Fusion Rocket Launcher, you'll need to go into the secret room mentioned in the PlayStation instructions above.

If you go into the secret room described above, there is another walkway coming out of the large room where you pick up the Fusion Rocket Launcher. At some point in that walkway, you'll hit another level load. If you did not go into the secret room but followed the main path, you'll hit a level load in a corridor heading out of the room that held the small reapers.

L9S4: Waterfall!

Depending on the path you took in the last section, you'll be in one of two corridors. If you went through the secret room, you'll need to make a hole on the right side of the corridor next to the deadend. This will put you out on a walkway next to a chasm. If you did not enter the secret room, you'll follow the corridor to the same walkway, meeting some reapers along the way. Peek over the side and you'll see a pool of water below being fed by a waterfall. Continue along the walkway and you'll eventually find yourself down at the level of this pool. Behind a large rock in the middle of the pool you'll find the next corridor which has two shooting drones before reaching a large open room with several drones firing lasers. You need to destroy all of these drones before the game will allow you to press the button to open the gate into Capek's Zoo.
