Red Faction 3
Red Faction 3 was a title in development by Volition as a sequel to Red Faction II, before its cancellation around 2003, following the lukewarm reception of its predecessor. Some code that had been originally developed for Red Faction 3 would later be repurposed for The Punisher.
Development
Around the time of Red Faction IIs release, a small team of Volition employees began initial prototyping work for a third Red Faction title. No major story work was completed. The project was ultimately cancelled before leaving the prototype stage, due in large part to Red Faction IIs worse-than-expected commercial performance.[1]
A short time later, Volition began work on The Punisher, which would ultimately incorporate some of the code that had been developed for the project that was initially expected to become Red Faction 3.[1]
Gameplay
Red Faction 3 was to be more akin to Red Faction - the first game in the series - rather than its immediate predecessor Red Faction II. It was to be set on Mars, take place at least somewhat above ground, and feature the use of vehicles for navigation over uneven terrain.[1]
