Red Faction 3 was a title in development by Volition as a sequel to Red Faction II, prior to its cancellation around 2003.

Red Faction 3 was entirely separate from and, in fact, was cancelled several years prior to work beginning on the project that would eventually become Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Development

Around the time Red Faction II was released, a small team of Volition employees began initial prototyping work for a third Red Faction title, which was to use an upgraded version of the Geo-Mod engine, and was to be released at least on the PlayStation 2. No major story work is known to have been completed. The project was ultimately cancelled before leaving the prototype stage, due in large part to the worse-than-expected commercial performance of Red Faction II.[1]

A short time later, Volition began work on The Punisher, which would ultimately incorporate some of the code that had been developed for the project that was initially expected to become Red Faction 3.[1]

Gameplay

Red Faction 3 was to be more akin to Red Faction - the first game in the series - rather than its immediate predecessor Red Faction II. It was to be set on Mars, take place at least somewhat above ground, and feature the use of vehicles for navigation over uneven terrain.[1]
