Maintenance is the seventh level/chapter in the Red Faction single player campaign. It consists of four individual maps and begins after Parker and Gryphon escape the Executive Suites at the end of L6:Corporate HQ. It is followed by L8:Medical and Science Labs.

L7S1: Maintenance Entrance

At the end of Corporate HQ, Parker and Gryphon escape the Executive Suites through a room featuring an Environmental Suit and a selection of weapons. As you inch forward towards the first of several forcefields in this section, a cutscene plays where Gryphon successfully tricks the guards into powering down the forcefield. Unfortunately this is the last time Gryphon will get the drop on the guards and you'll have to navigate through the corridors of this section to find guard stations where you can press buttons to disable the forcefields blocking your way. This section offers some interesting world building as you see techs working on robots in one area and a warehouse area in another. Just like the end of Corporate HQ, you'll need to keep an eye on Gryphon. If he is shot too many times, a fail state will trigger a "Game Over Screen".

L7S2: Fighter Docking Bay

L7S2 starts you out just past the final forcefield you need to turn off in Maintenance Entrance. In this section, you'll need to infiltrate more guard posts to clear your way forward. Once in a warehouse-like room it will briefly look like there's nowhere else to go but if you kill the guards in that room, Gryphon will run into the room and reveal a secret door to the next corridor in the section. Follow this corridor to another guard station, keeping an eye on Gryphon as this is a high risk area for him to die from gunfire. Once you shutdown this last guard station, you'll be able to open the interstitial doors and allow Gryphon to come to you. An elevator is just beyond this guard station that will take you down to the Aesir/Fighter Docking Bay. The elevator descent is another risky sequence where Gryphon may take stray bullets so do your best to take out the guards shooting at you. When you reach the bottom, you can explore the area or just jump in the Aesir and fly straight up through a door that will open in the ceiling.

L7S3: Fighter Testing Grounds

Note: If you load this level from the console, you will not have the Aesir necessary to progress through the level. You will start L7S3 rising from the docking bay area into an Aesir Training course. You will not be allowed to leave the Aesir until the last small part of this section. If you attempt to exit, Gryphon will say "We can't get out here." Proceed through the caverns and several enemy Aesirs will approach you for battle. The fighter testing grounds may appear labyrinthine but it's not especially difficult to find your way to the final area of the section. In this final area, guards will shoot at you from the ground and from four towers. You'll have to clear the landing area before the game will let you exit the Aesir in a cutscene. When the cutscene allows you to exit the Aesir, you can walk back into the area you just had your battle to find ammunition in the bunker building in the middle. Gryphon will run and remain in the elevator but if you haven't killed everyone and every Aesir, Gryphon can be killed if you leave him alone to explore the area. This section ends as you descend in the elevator.

L7S4: Refuse Disposal Plant

L7S4 starts as the doors of the elevator you entered in L7S3 open. Thankfully, Gryphon is mostly safe in this area once you go off on your own but can rarely get in the way. The scripting for the main encounter in Refuse Disposal Plant has been known to be somewhat inconsistent but this can be mitigated by saving the game and loading the save before entering any of the closed doors in this section. Once you do enter the large area behind the closed doors, you'll find an "Ultor Suppression Combot" ready to ruin your day. You'll need to defend yourself from the combot until Parker can figure out what to do. During normal play, it is not supposed to be possible to destroy the Combot from gunfire alone. If you do manage to kill the combot through gunfire, you'll need to reload a save. At a certain point in the fight, Hendrix will save the day by giving you means to destroy the Combot. You'll need to draw the Combot down a conveyor belt and into a large waste disposal pit area and press a button to open the door to the pit and another button to turn on the fan to blow the Combot down into the incinerator. If you know what to do, it is possible to get the Combot in the disposal pit before Hendrix tells you what to do. One the Combot is down in the flames of the incinerator, it will explode and a cutscene will trigger. Orion and a small group of Red Faction fighters arrive and take Gryphon off your hands to bring him to Eos. After the cutscene, you'll have a good opportunity to fully explore the area the combot came from as it has a treasure trove of ammunition, health, and armor pickups. If you can't figure out where to go next, Hendrix will again chime in and let you know you can exit this area through a vent in the disposal pit. You may need to re-open the door to the pit but the fire will now be extinguished so you'll be safe to head to the next area and a new mission.
